Subject: ? know if glaze is food safe?
----------------------------Original message----------------------------
Like so many others, I have quite a file full of glazes I've been
collecting. However, none say if they are food safe. Do I need to make
test tiles of each one and send them somewhere to be tested?.....or are
there certain characteristics of a recipe that I can recognize as making
the glaze safe or hazardous?

There are thousands of glaze formulas like this. No one knows if they will
be food safe or not. And even if one was in the past, a new source of one of
the glaze chemicals, a different particle size of one of the ingredients,
etc., and the glaze will leach differently.

And tiles wont work. You need to put the glazes on the insides of test cups
or bowls so that the acid solution can remain in it for the 24 hour leach
period.
