For those that e-mailed me for the poem I thought it would be easier to just
send it to the list... (Hope it doesn't bog down the list too much) This
poem sounds like it was written for some of us mud types... The only thing
I would add to this poem is when I get old the thrill of making crazy pots
that only make me smile and playing in the mud with children!!! For you
male potters, it's up to you about the satin sandals and summer gloves!

WHEN I AM AN OLD WOMAN

I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me,
and I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
and satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
and run my stick along the public railings
and make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
and pick the flowers in other people's gardens
and learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
and eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.
But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
and pay our rent and not swear in the street
and set a good example for the children.
We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.
But maybe I ought to practise a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old and start to wear purple!

I have this hanging in my studio so I can see it at all times. When I get
bogged down or take life/pottery too serious or read negative e-mails
I just look up read this poem and start practicing a little now... :):):)
There are times it really works!

Best wishes,
Audrey

Audrey,

Did you know that this is actually a poem called "Warning" by Jenny Joseph
from a wonderful book called When I Am An Old Woman I Shall Wear Purple,
edited by Sandra Martz. The copy I have is a trade paperback and is
published by Papier-Mache Press. The rest of the poems, stories, etc. in the
book are wonderful, too.

I tried to send the author's name but my post didn't make it to the list. I
have this poem on a card that was given to me from a dear friend. She said
it sounded like me. I just think some potters would fit this poem to a tee.
Thanks Bobbi

Best Wishes,
Audrey
