elmers glue and kiln alarms

Hi all,

I have 2 questions.

1- Someone suggested using Elmer's Glue on a pot to be reglazed and refired.
Why? What does it do? Not knowing I tried it on a piece that's firing right
now. Am wondering what to expect. Obviously it was a piece of minor value.

2. Last month I set the controller and went to bed. That was the last time
until I get an alarm to ring, buzz or clang if the power goes off. There was
a slight power interruption and the controller shut down with "error" on the
screen. The kiln wasn't finished and really set my schedule back during a
busy time. Does anyone have any idea how we could go about making an alarm
that I could plug into the outlet in the bedroom?

Sure would appreciate ANY ideas.

Please post your Elmer's Glue results. I tried it on a re-fire and it
failed. I had better
luck with the glaze alone.......this was on overfired bisqueware.

there are rechargable flashlights that plug into ordinary wall sockets.
they turn themselves on when the power is interrupted. perhaps the light
from a couple of them might wake you.

Elmer's Glue helps the glaze stay on the pot when reglazing. Some potters
use hairspray with the same results. When I brushed a thin coat of diluted
glue (let it dry) onto the pot I couldn't see any signs that I used the glue
after firing. On one pot I brushed the glue on full strength, while the glue
was still wet I glazed the pot moving the glaze and glue around together. I
used a brush at first but then started finger painting. After firing the
pot it looked like it was textured, but was smooth to the touch. It was a
fun experiment, I sill have the pot on a shelf in my kitchen. Life is too
short so it reminds me to take time to be childlike and have fun!

To anyone that has underglaze experience. This is just a thought?
I was wondering if it would be safe to use Elmer's Glue with underglaze in a
children's class and let them use a Q-tip and do some Q-tip(finger)
painting? In glazing a pot the glue acts like the glaze in wood painting to
keep the paint wet and workable. "If it's safe" I think it would be a fun
children's project...TIA

Hi Bobbi,
You might want to look into the Orton Autofire controer. It has the ability
to restart the firing after a power outage, provided the power comes back
on within an hour. Great feature.
You can reach Orton @ 800-999-5442 (Rick Severence is the controller
tech...very helpful)

Dear Bobbi,

In England we have a small device that can be plugged into an electric
socket, it's battery powered, and beeps when there is a power failure.
The main use is as a warning for unwanted defrosting of fridges and
freezers.

This might help in your situation.

As a comfort, you might have been lucky, some of our controllers can
lock on when there's a spike in the power supply. Then everything, once
it has cooled down, comes out in one lump if you don't spot it in time!

Cheers,

Mike Bailey.

Hi
Your elmers needs to be watered down and let dry before applying your glaze.
I received your photo and we will work on the site this weekend.
Well I'm off to teach wee people today. Gotta love them, they keep me
young. Ya right tomorrow I turn 47!!!

Best Wishes

I tried it with a black gloss glaze, cone 6+, and I got mottled results. BUT
I liked the effect and will file it away in my deepest recesses for future
use. Audrey suggested that using it thin instead of full strength as I did,
would produce better results.
