saggar fire color comes off pots (help!)

Hi everyone -

My problem is the color can be pulled off with tape, scratched or scraped off
the pot with your fingernail. I have been saggar firing for a few years and
am getting great results (but I have this little problem).

I am spraying a terra sig on my pots bone dry or after I bisque them. I
noticed that the color would come off when I was pulling price tags off the
pots. Can you suggest a good sealer/finish to apply on my pots? Can you
please give the name brand because I have tried several and they have caused
yellowing or the same problem still occurred?

Thanks,

Lori

Lori:

I wonder if the terra sig is coming off from the clay body, taking the color
with it. In saggar and pit fired pieces I've burnished the clay body then
bisqued and fired and have never had your problem. I seal with "Aqua Mix Seal &
Finish, Low Sheen" (available at Home Base/Home Depot type stores) then apply
one or more coats of Clapham's beeswax polish (which I get from Restoration
Hardware) and buff with a shoe brush. Hope this helps...

Try Trewax from the hardware store. I use that on all my saggar and horse
hair pots. Price stickers do not pull any of the color or finish off. I
have the problem of price stickers not staying on my pots because of the
humid weather here in Virginia.(Any advice for this problem?) I have not
noticed any yellowing. I have used a few other brands that were more
expensive but I've gone back to Trewax. I've used Bees Wax but on my pots
it seems to darken the color of the pot. I use it when I want that effect.
I have no idea why your colors would come off your pots. Like you I have
only been doing this a few years. I haven't had that problem yet but ya
never know if or when it will happen. I would also be interested in
comments from others on the list. TIA
Good luck Lori!

Lori,
Is your terra sig made from the same clay you're throwing with? If not, you may
have a fit problem. Try making sig from your claybody.
