hamer and hamer

A plea for fairness on behalf of a friend:

Would those Clay Arters who refer to =22Hamer=22 as =22he=22 in the =
singular, please
note that =22The Potters Dictionary of Materials and Techniques=22 was =
researched,
written and edited by both Frank AND JANET Hamer. Janet was not just the
secretary, typist and coffee maker throughout the years of compiling this
authorative work. Her technical knowledge and input was every bit as vital =
and
fundamental as Franks. They worked in partnership on the whole book, sharing
every aspect and pooling their formidable individual knowledge and =
experience.

Now in its fourth edition and a =22classic=22 of its kind, it should be time=
to give
credit where it is due. Especially in this age of political correctness. I =
would
like to see a US authoress being ignored and degraded to the inferred role =
of
the =22little wife who made the coffee and just has to have her name added =
to give
her a thrill=22.

The names are in alphabetical order, hence Frank followed by Janet. I also
happen to know that the publishers pay the loyalties 50:50 with two separate=
pay
cheques, so how about a bit of 50:50 =22quoting=22 in Clay Art and =
elsewhere?

Either =22Hamer and Hamer=22 or =22The Hamers=22 would do nicely if using =
last names
only. =22Frank + Janet Hamer=22 or even =22F and J Hamer=22 if feeling =
voluable. And
before anyone points out that books by several authors are usually
listed/credited under the one name, that is usually when there are several =
and
not just two or a partnership. The Hamers also happen to share the same last
name as well as being partners on this book.

Thank you for your future courtesy on this point. I am sure both Frank and =
Janet
will appreciate it.

A search on Addall.com turned up two hardback
editions of The Potters Dictionary of Materials
and Techniques.
ISBN 9057030918 Craftsman Press Aug 1997, $85.00
list, for $70.61 delivered from Barnes and Noble
and:
ISBN 0812234049 University of Pennslyvania Press
June 1,1997, $49.95 list, for $34.25 delivered
from Barnes and Noble. The one I have.
Anyone know what the difference is between the
two?

I am sure someone will have the ISBN they can
check for you, but I suspect it could be that
one is Edition No. 3 and the other, more
expensive one is probably the
latest_4th_Edition.

I know Frank and Janet did a lot of updating and
editing for the 4th Edition, so do make sure you
get the right one.

On the other hand, if you don't mind missing
that "jump in knowledge", you can go for the
older edition. No one can keep up in print with
technology as new materials emerge (and
disappear!) and the Hamers are no exception.
Let's face it, sometimes "less is more" and it
is such a wonderful book, a few facts and
figures more or less are not going to hurt...

I bought one new at a local bookshop for $100.00 Australian, approx $50.00
U.S. 1999 edition.

The cheaper one is not only the Fourth edition
but a 1999 reprint, clothbound with dust jacket.
When I got it they had an additional $10 off.
So it only cost me $24.25
Seems to be a complete edition so I was somewhat
taken aback by seeing a $85 price on the
other and wondered if there is a "super"
edition.
Thanks again.
10 above zero and we will be loading frozen pots
in the frozen kiln in about an hour after we
blow the
dirt off. Malcom'sShino has hair about an inch
long. At least the wind quit for now.

I bought the second one ( Univ. of Penn press - ISBN 0812234069) for $44.96
at Borders. It's the Fourth Edition and I note it was printed in Hong Kong,
which probably adds value in our industry.
