This is my first posting...I just subscribed today. Where have you been
all my life? Here is something I could use some imput on.

My partner and I live in Toronto Ontario and we have recently purchased
land in Saulnierville, Nova Scotia with dreams of building and re-locating
there. If all goes well, this plan will come to fruition in about three
years. Can anyone give me advice on the smartest way to re-locate your
pottery business and start over another province? Anyone who's done this
type of thing before and can warn me about the pitfals or reveal some of
the things they wish they'd known? Is there anyone in the area of Clare,
Nova Scotia who would like to connect? We are going to be there from the
9th of July to the 27th.

Meteghan River,(down the road from Saulnierville) in 1972 and remained
there until 1976.Everything we owned was packed in a large container and
shipped from Japan directly to Yarmouth,Nova Scotia where we picked it up.
I imagine the train still runs from Toronto to Yarmouth and the container
process continues to be available. After a stint in Nigeria we returned to
Meteghan River where we remained with our two children before moving West.
In Nova Scotia we were known as the Bleu Rocque Pottery. Isao & Don

Dear Rebecca,

My partner and I just moved our studio from Washington DC to Palm Springs,
CA, a distance of about 2600 miles. A few highlights and lowlights:

Equipment: We moved the wheels, pug mill, extruder, etc, but left the
kilns. They needed element changing and one was pretty bad. Sold it cheap.

Pottery: Since we were moving our household, too, we had the movers pack up
all the pottery. Not a single piece was broken, and it sure was nice to
have some inventory during the long set up process.

Raw materials: Everything was in plastic tubs of some sort. We duct taped
it all, and they all came through fine. The movers said they could take the
full bagged raw materials, too. Mistake. One broken bag makes a lot of
dust. Also, the contractors for our new studio decimated a few more.

Location: We had already leased our new studio/store. The person who was
supposed to gut it for us before we arrived did not, so we ended up moving
equipment from side to side while doing the floor. Major pain.

Construction: Finding contractors "cold" in a new place was difficult.
Some were good, some were terrible. Some delays, but that is to be
expected.

New Equipment: Before you buy/locate/install your kiln, check with the
locality on their regulations. Also, check with your supplier. Our longest
wait was for our new kiln, which took 15 weeks, instead of the expected 8.

Customers: Well, we are trying to keep our big back east wholesale
customers, but it will be tough. Collect all your accounts receivable
before you leave. It is terrible trying to collect long distance.

Start up: Make sure you have enough capital to keep you going for the
amount of time it takes you to attract new customers. If not, you'll be
broke before you open.

Good luck. Write me off line if you want more detailed information.
