questions for wholesalers/production people: help!

Last year I quit my "outside" job to work in clay full time. Things are
going better than I would ever have imagined. Now I need to know how to
deal with it. (!)

Those of you who have taken a year's worth of orders at a wholesale
show could help me here by answering a few questions and adding your
own insight.

When a client makes a huge order, how do you integrate it with other
orders?

How do you project your delivery dates?

How do you determine discounts? (Some will always ask for volumn
discounts over the norm.)

What about shipping? Or delivery?

When do you just say no?

How do you know when it's time to raise your prices? By how much? (I've
always understood that if you can't keep up with production, raise
prices.) But when is that? When your delivery dates are (?) months out?

How do you know when it's time to hire help? What kind and how much?
$$?? Do you pay by the hour or by production?

Do you divide your work week into segments.... like throwing/building
Mon-Wed or do some of everything every day?

I know all this will be personalized, but right now I'm kinda
overwhelmed and trying to just keep things straight. Any help would be
wonderful.

Thanx in advance for your input. And thanx to whoever was the genius
behind this forum.

Tena
This is my first post to CLAYART so I hope it makes it. In response to your
numerous questions, I would like to refer you to a book by Steven Branfman.
"The Potters Professional Handbook" published by Krause Publications
1-800-258-0929 (Free catalog!). Most if not all of your questions are
addressed in a very readable way. Lots of resources too, in fact this book
is how I got hooked up to CLAYART. good luck with your new free life, I hope
that one day I might be able to take the plunge into fulltime clay work
myself.
John
