redu kilns in residential areas

Hello I am new to this so here goes. I have just moved to Virginia and I
have questions regarding the use of gas or propane fired kilns in either
city or residential areas. I am looking to buy a house in the
Fredericksburg area but I have concerns as to whether I will be able to
build a redu kiln on my property or not. Now I know that I will get the
best answers from my local courthouse but I was curious as to anyone elses
experience on the matter. Does anyone else out there fire a redu kiln in
their backyard? Do your neighbors complain? Any issues? What about
homeownser insurance?

Thanks for any input, Nina Ratrie

Dan Finnegan in Fredericksburg has a gas kiln in town. Check with him.

I am in Las Vegas, Nevada so undoubtedly things may be a little different. I
would suspect that it will depend alot on things like zoning. Most
residential areas allow for hobby use. When I bought my house three years ago
with my studio in mind, I picked the County over the City because the
inspectors were easier to work with. I also bought a Geil kiln instead of
building one ( I would have preferred to build). Geil is also AGS certified.
Planning and zoning just rubber stamped it. I let the neighborhood kids make
things from clay from time to time and give away pots to the neighbors. the
kiln is in a nice attractive shed with a removeable roof panel for firing. No
problems.

Hi Nina

We live out of town but have neighbors on all sides of a half acre lot.
No one complains about husband Les's propane gas kiln. I doubt that
most people even know when it is operating. The kiln shed can be seen
from the main busy road. It should not cause a problem.
Regards
Maureen
