The estimable George Koller made a good suggestion about spraying grit:

Hi George,

I am using such a texture gun now, and they do the trick with the following
drawbacks:
1. they leak
2. they are heavy (even to my manly forearms)
3. it is hard to achieve repeatable results
4. they are in my experience impossible for any two people to produce the
same result with)
5. if(when) they are dropped on their nose, the orifice gets squirrely

This being said, they work great for with slip for a textured surface.

Good idea!
