The stuff you are looking for which is used to etch printed circuit boards
is called Ferric Chloride. It should be available from any major electronic
hobby supplier in crystal form, or for a chemical supplier in liquid form.
Hobby suppliers usually sell in small quantities at a big mark up, so if you
want quantity, check the chemical suppliers.

I am ready to do the horsehair raku thing.
I have seen it demonstrated and more or
less know how to do it. I have horses and
have collected tail hair. I have terre -sig
bisque fired pots ready to go. I found the
pre-val sprayers at Home Depot. Then I
bopped on over to my local Radio Shack
and asked for Ferric Oxide/etching
solution/circuit board cleaner stuff and
the salesperson just stared at me.....
didn't know what I was talking about.
She showed me some electronic cleaner
in aerosol form and stated that is all they
carry. Can anyone out there in clayland
give me a specific product or brand name
to ask for?

Forget all the fancy places. Just go to any farm supply and ask for iron
chloride. It comes in bags in dry form like coarse sand. I bought 20# or
so a few years back for $5. Farmers spread it on their fields to nourish
the soil. Just add water and decant the yellow liquid. Wear rubber gloves
because the liquid is acidic. Hydrochloric is my guess. Nils

Ferric chloride is used in printmaking ("etching"); therefore,
it is available from places like Graphic Chemical in Villa Park, IL; it can be
purchased as crystals or pre-mixed.

FeCl3 (solid) => Fe3+ + 3 Cl- (in solution)
3 H2O (liquid) => 3 H+ + 3 OH- (in solution)
Fe3+ + 3 OH- => Fe(OH)3(solid)

leaving mostly H+ + Cl- in solution i.e. hydrochloric acid

Just had to keep my hand in balancing equations. Quite fun.

One of the most available sources (almost EVERYWHERE) for ferric chloride
is Radio Shack, if all you need is a small (pint or so) quantity, to try.
They sell it in bottles for printed circuit etching. In most reasonable
sized cities, electronic parts supply stores have it in bulk. I was in one
today- the price was $25 for a gallon of saturated solution.

Ouch!
