porcelain slabs w/o cracks?

I'm interested in making a line of work using mid-range
firing porcelain slabs..........previous experimentation
w/porcelain slabs yielded lots of cracking. Would love
input re: clay bodies, additives or ???? that might get the
work through w/o cracks.
Thanks so much,

Lynne in Western Colorado......oh, so beautiful on this
first day of June.......

Lynne,
Try adding paper pulp to your porcelain. I have used cotten linters and
added them to casting slip. then I pour the slip onto a slab of plaster
that was made on a piece of glass. the result is large slabs of leather
hard clay that are extremely strong.
Good luck
Curt

Any porcelain body will probably do, IF you add fiber to it before you
use it. I've made life size porcelain figures using grolleg porcelain with
both nylon fiber and paper fiber. No cracking, and I've done both once-firing
in soda, and bisqued first. You can add paper fiber(easier if you make
your own clay, because you can add the shredded paper directly to the
mixer) or nylon fiber.
If you buy your clay, then you can wedge in the nylon fiber. It is a little
more complicated to add paper fiber to purchased, prepared clay. But
there is a lot of information in the clayart archives re: paper clay.

The fibers of either of the above should prevent the kinds of problems
you mention. Generally speaking, the fibers will keep your work in one
piece until it is bisqued. They burn out, of course, during bisque firing.
