kiln workshop & question on propane & btus

Hello all,
I am hosting a kiln building workshop at The Interlaken School of Art (western M
2 1/2hrs from NY, 2 1/2 from Boston, and 1 hr from Albany, NY). That is June 12
13. Anyone interested can contact me at makeart@bcn.net. We will be building a
cu ft downdraft with wood option. It'll be a standard kiln with sprung arch, LP
fired and an experimental (and reversible) wood fire twist. We would like to ha
two more people but can handle up to 5 more (9 maximum).

The question is this - my gas supplier suggested today that I have an 18 foot
submarine tank for this 40 cu ft kiln. I think he is crazy! We have nothing el
but our raku kilns firing on propane. Anyone have updated and simple formulae f
figuring out the specs on gas need? I figure that we will be running 2 burners
200,000 BTU capacity each, but that the kiln peak rating should be about 245,000
BTU@ peak/hour. This I gleaned from Olsen's kiln book. I also read that a 500
tank should be sufficient (which is what I expected), but I believe that a 500 g
tank is a ten footer. Help! We don't want this monster in our beautiful school
yard!

Respond directly and thanks

Dear Andrew:

I had two 500 gallon tanks linked together. You can only fill a propane tank
to 80% capacity and they can freeze up on you as well. Having two smaller
tanks works better than one thousand gallon tank.
I had three kilns totally only about 65cu ft, by the way.

Warm regards,
June

Andrew,

Yes, you need at least a 500g tank, many of which can be buried. If you would
like additional information, please call.
