Greetings to all,

I've decided to "delurk" for a moment to ask some questions. I've been
searching the archives for tips on how to do a primitive firing using a
50 gal. metal drum. What I've mostly found is information on what to use
in the firing (ie, seaweed, various metals, sawdust, etc.). And while
this info is fantastic, one of the main things I was looking for is info
on how to load the drum. Basically, what's the best way to load to avoid
breakage due to settling? Any suggestions on preparing the drum for it
to be used for this? Thanks for all information that you think might be
helpful. By the by, I've been collecting all of the data I've found in
the archives into a word file and if anyone would like a copy please let
me know. I'd be happy to copy it into an email and forward it.

Thanks for any and all help,

Brett

Brett - I've just started playing with sawdust firing in a small drum,
with pretty goods results. Just using small drum and firing individual
pots. Bed of sawdust about 7cm thick on the bottom of the drum, and
place the pot on this. Seaweed, copper sulphate etc can be placed
around it, then pack more sawdust around and over the top. A layer of
about 7 - 10cm sawdust over the top of the top allows for a better build
up of heat. Found a lot of wood kindling has to be used to get a good
heat build up to start. Books I've read say put a lid over it when the
flames die down, but I've found that this seems to extinguish the
smouldering. I just leave it open. I'd be interested in seeing the
information you have collected. By the way, don't get salt directly
onto a pot because it pits it. Diane.
