Leslie and others: I did this (painting iron oxide on the edge of the
cones)a couple yrs. ago because it is very hard to see the witness cones in
my Paragon test kiln unless I leave it quite empty behind the cones. But I
heard on the rumor mill (maybe on Clayart) that the iron oxide affected the
heat work. So I phoned the expert at Orton, who is Dale Fronk
(800/999-5442), and he assured me that it affected the melt of the cones.
Let him explain it to you. I had even tried painting iron ox. stripes on a
piece of soft brick behind the cones. That wasn't too successful.

I now use welder's glasses. I read further in today's Digest and see there
are many suggestions. I like Dannon's suggestion of using a blow dryer, at
a distance, hoping that soft brick dust doesn't blow in, I suppose. Also,
Steve Mills' horizontal cones, but 3 of them ?

Hello. Painting a stripe of iron oxide on the side of the cone helps make it
more visible in the kiln.
