I looked in the archives because I do remember this discussion taking place
about a year ago, but struck out. Looking for Tile Press recommendations:

Secondly, I have some clay from Sheffield that they recommend for tiles but =
the
firing range is cone 02-cone 10 (not a typo). I have fired to cone 6, and =
have
inquired of Sheffield what is the =22ideal=22 cone to utilize, but I don't =
think I
asked the right question, since I didn't really understand the response. =
How
can clay have that wide a firing range, why would you want that big a range?
Would cone 10 be harder, more durable or is just a function of what glaze =
you
use?

Hi, Diane,
I built my own tile press, which I think works as well as any commercial
one I've ever seen. It's built on the same design as a library press,
if you know what that is. It's a screw-operated thing, which I made out
of 2x4's, using a second-hand press screw. This is a big screw with a
flat plate on one end and a crank handle on the other. Just built a box
about 18" square, put some 2x4's up the sides a foot or so, put one
across the top of those, and installed the press screw in the middle of
that, with a square of stout plywood attached to the bottom of the
screw. It cost me $12 about 15 years ago.
