harry davis book, pugmill info.

There is a Harry Davis video out there, most of which is spent on he and a
couple of helpers building one of those pug mills. You may want to check out
the video. Also, used books stores can do a search for the book. Most stores
charge a couple of dollars per search and you might get lucky and find one
who'll do it for free.
If you are a member of the S.Cal chapter of ACS you can rent the video for
just the cost of postage :-)

June

bookseller.Had tried Amazon,with no luck.
No,unfortunately,I am not a member of ACS.I am a novice potter(mostly
self-taught) .
On top of that,I am new to the computer and e-mail.Who said that you can't
teach an old dog new tricks?

I found a copy of Harry Davis's book at abebooks.com , This is a really great
place to find used or out of print books. This book was not a cheap book
though. It is in almost new condition, but was over $60.00 U.S. After reading
the directions for the pugmill though, I would buy one if at all possible.
Something like 20 pages for the deairing model. You need a machine shop and a
lot of time. I would have to live someplace where making one would be worth it
over buying one. It was enough work just scanning and sending the pages to
South Africa.

Actually, amazon.com lists this book, and they have an out-of-print
location service. You order it, but they don't charge you until they find
it. I know it works sometimes, because a guy who was looking for some of
my out-of-print books just emailed me that amazon had found copies of them,
though it took them a long time.

There are other firms who specialize in locating out-of-print books. I got
my copy of The Potter's Alternative (impressive book-- Davis was a
Renaissance man) through a remaindering mail order company-- I get a lot of
good books that way.

I saw some Davis books at a bookstore in Colo. Springs not to long ago, for $15!
The pugmill, not the concrete version, is very much like a BLUEBIRD.
By the way. The additional pieces that you can produce with this machine will w
more than make up for it's cost. I use a basic no deairing machine (I mix my ow
clay in one of their dough mixers) and it works great.
Loving it in Salida CO

A couple of years ago I was able to send some Davis books that I found
locally to a few clayarters, but it is no longer available here any more
so the specialist services seem to be the best way to go.

BTW the original Venco was based on Harry's design and Venco paid Harry a
royalty for it. Geoff Hill of Venco improved the design, especially
simplifying the vacuum chamber. I built one to Harry's original design
and only sold it when I could afford a Venco. The Aluminium body being
superior to the mild steel one for white clays. Wouldn't part with it for
anything now.

Best Wishes
