I plan to be in the San Francisco area June 17-21 and would appreciate
any information on current ceramics exhibits, open pottery studios or good
pottery supply places, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Marilyn!

There's one community pottery I recommend for you to visit (I used to be a
member there): Ruby's Ceramics. It's located in the Castro District, on Noe
Street, near 19th. A small gallery is in the front vestibule, alive with all
sorts of pottery and ceramic art, while in the background, you can see
ceramic-making in action! Ruby's is one of many such "community shops," found
in nearly every neighborhood of the City. Ruby's is a also a great place to
find out where the best exhibits and other clay shops are, in San Francisco.
For a museum setting, visit the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA).
Also visit the Asian Museum for excellent examples of very early Chinese
celadon ware, and the neighboring museum (I can't remember its name--it's at
the tip of my fingers, too!), for traditional and some contemporary ceramic
art.

You might also consider crossing the S. F. Bay, and visiting Berkeley, where
an abundance of potters live and work. The UC Ceramics Dept. is one place to
find out where the best exhibits and shops are in the East Bay. If you are
interested in seeing ceramics in a museum setting, go to the Oakland Museum
of California, or to the UC Berkeley Art Museum.

Best wishes, and happy travelling!

Just out of the shop, still in my birthday suit, and waiting for a break in
the unusually hot temperatures outside. Thank goodness for swamp coolers!

Start w/ Dorothy Weiss Gallery and ask her where else to go. the
gallery reping Arneson's estate is there but the name escapes me.
It got my attn to see Arneson work up close & personal. Dorothy
will know where it is. I didn't find tons of ceramics there.
If you get to Berkely go to Trax - open only on weekends run
by Sandy Simon. she carries excellent work mostly from
the Minnesota group. KG

I hope you would find a trip to the Berkeley PottersGuild well worth the
trouble. We are a group of eighteen potters, who work in the building, and
have for many years. We actually bought the building about fifteen years
ago to keep our rents under control because the neighborhood is the hottest
retail section on our side of the bay. We are located at 731 Jones st, at
4th st. No pots are sold in the building, except those made by us. We are
only open for a few shows a year, since we use work space most of the time,
but we have set a side an area as a gallery which is open every saturday and
sunday from 10 to 5. Our shows are very popular and grow from year to year.
We are all pretty much established artists and show great diversity. We range
from cone 10 reduction fired.porcelain thru raku, wood fired ware
earthenware, midrange elec fired, sculpture, you name it. We would love to
have visitors come by. Call us at 510-524-7031, or me at 510- 845-0849
You can e-mail me rikigil@ cwnet.

Also Virginia Breier Gallery out on Sacramento near Divisadero. Lots of
interesting pots plus other stuff too. Be sure to go through to the little
back deck space with sculptures hanging about.
