extruder problems.

Last Fall, I bought a Brent Extruder for my classroom because I have
seen many of them in operation years after their purchase. As of this
message, mine is totally useless, because the U-bolt slips on the
vertical pipe when the least amount of pressure is applied down on the
lever. I have been careful to use clay that is slightly softish and
still, the upright pipe and the U-bolt surfaces are practically glazed
smooth. I was
thinking of roughing them up with a grinder or simply notching them so
the U-bolt would grab instead of slipping, but I thought I'd wait and
see if the greater wisdom of the list had encountered such a problem and
had any solutions.
Things are finally warming up in Las Vegas. Oh well...

Do you have access to a welder, John?
Two options:
1. Take off the shackle and weld a little bead on the inside surface, or,
2. run a bead down the lengeth of the upright pipe.
I like the idea of ADDING more metal, rather than grinding away
material to rough-up the surfaces. You can then grind off part
of the weld if it's too much.

Option #2 sounds pretty radical, but I've done it, and it
works. Still, I would try to work with the shackle first.
BTW, I still like the "shackle" system more than the "notched"
system on some extruders.
