Hi everyone.

I am evaluating the trial version of insight and have been unable to find
CuO (Copper Oxide) in its list of oxides. Is there an updated list
somewhere or am I missing something?

Hopefully I will catch on to this limits thing soon!

Hi Michele,

I'm an Insight user too, and have included the colouring oxides in my
calculations. I'm not even sure how I got them in now, as it was awhile
ago. Probably from Glazechem (another program that is compatible with
Insight) as I think the basic weights and formulas were there in it's quite
lovely periodic table screen. I put in coefficients of expansion as well,
from David Hewitt. He and a partner are researching this topic now and seem
to think the colouring oxides often prevent crazing. Still, I kind of like
#'s to be there; might have to update those sometime.
As well, most colouring oxides definitely flux and I think including them as
fluxes is important. Also, the quantitiies are not insignificant always
either. (Tin, titanium, chrome, zirconium are not fluxes - and I've been
including iron as not a flux for electric oxidation firing). (In my
database these one are are R2O3) I haven't seen the recent edition of Hamer
yet (have it on order) but the old one was quite good under the section of
potter's periodic tables. It did a lovely job of explaining the roles of
the acids and alkalis.

For ease of transfer, maybe I'll just send you my copy of the materials
database. You can use it, if you like or just print out and enter the parts
you are interested in. I have updated the prices of chemicals as well and
think that they are fairly realistic for smaller quantity users.

If you did want to use the file as is, I think you will have to rename your
current file materials file to standard.old to keep it intact. Then reverse
the process if you prefer to use it.

Your calculations will probably turn out differently as I have been
designating boron as a flux - though I keep vaccilating about that one;
Also the Gerstley borate formula comes from Ron Roy and is slightly
different from the original.

Will send this to you directly (with file) and also post to the list as
someone may have some corrections to the assumptions I've been making so
happily.

Good luck,

Autumn Downey

I have now got Insight 5.3 and have loaded it. I have started to read =
all the material and although it looks quite daunting I am going to =
persevere this time and learn to make it work for me.

I appreciated your post when I asked for help and I agree with you. It =
is better to post some of these questions to the list as there may be =
many out there the same as I am (chicken) about getting their feet wet.

One more quick question - is there a filing and sorting by recipe name, =
etc.?

Wishing you a Great New Year 2001! Please keep writing to the Clayart =
list. There are many of us that look to all of you who are so helpful =
with your store of knowledge. It makes a person hope that some day it =
will be possible to be able to give back!!

Hi Les,
Sit at your computer with the manual and just start doing the lessons. It
may not seem clear at first, but it is actually pretty easy once you get the
knack. "Yeah, sure," you say but I never even mixed a glaze until one year
ago and only started teaching myself glaze chemistry six months before that.
And as for my expertise on computers...well, that's a very slim book!

No, really, playing with glazes on Insight is a blast and a real time saver.
I just got October CM and there is a page with 12 ^6 glazes. I input all of
them and may try two or three and even these will have some changes I
thought appropriate. Easy as pie.

Best regards, Carol

Les and Carol, et. al.
If you are using INSIGHT 5.3. be careful...the manual hasn't been up-dated.
Go to the DIGITALFIRE web site and look for the paragraph that talks about
downloading. In the last sentence they mention "What's New" there is a link
(blue type underlinded) to a web page of the changes in 5.3. This is
important stuff!!!

Hi Les.

Start with the lessons - There may be some of mine in there.

There is do data base that I am aware of (I use a Mac and am using an early
version.) I store my recipies in folders so I know where to find them -
cone 6 - cone 10 etc. I also save a duplicate on a zip disk so I will never
lose any incase of a crash.

Let me know what kind of computer you use - PC or Mac and I will send a
copy of my MDT if you like - that way - when you have questions we will be
on the same page.

Always - if you make any changes to your MDT (TMT on the PC version) like
prices for your materials - save a copy some where so you won't lose it
when you have a crash.

RR

One step at a time - little steps and you will make steady progress.
