those pesky business tax codes

Hello all,

I received a glossy flyer in the mail at work from one of the VanKampen
Funds (they are a family of mutual funds), with the following words on
the front:

"Some artists wait centuries for the public to appreciate their
work....."

These words are framed by small pictures of a sterotyped male "artist"
wearing a beret and sitting on a stool sketching, two paintings, a well
used artists' paintbrush and a realistic stone sculpture.

When you open the brochure, the words in large type are:

"Appreciation for the Comstock Fund hasn't taken quite as long." (They go
on to tell you about average annual total returns, including unrealized
appreciation, and try to convince you to add more money to their fund.)

I know that a number of Clayarters are reluctant to call themselves
artists for tax purposes, and I disagree with this from a tax
perspective. My point is that even the VanKampen mutual fund people are
saying that we do not need to be recognized by the public in order to
call ourselves artists. If I want to list my Schedule C occupation as
Artist, that's my call. However, I will be keeping a folder of
appropriate information just in case the IRS wants to challenge me. BTW
that flyer is going in my tax folder! I think it's great-- and not
because of the fund performance.

After Bonnie brought to my attention that my accountant should be inserting
the proper business tax code for my pottery and reminded me that I could be
more proactive with my tax forms, I checked over the entire batch of forms
and found other errors as well (including my husband being listed as the
sole owner of Black Leopard Clayware. I think not.)

ANYway, a big thanks to Bonnie for keeping me on the ball!

Be well....

Judith
