DID EVERYBODY GET ENOUGH CHOCOLATE???

Did anybody find the bag I'd stashed under the sink and forgot to put out on
saturday?? (bet the cleaning staff is happy!)

Watching the "mugs" appear on the Clayart side-board (then window sill, then
lamp stand, then refridge, then..) over the course of the 4 days only
whetted my appetite, what diversity, imagination, creativity, high quality
WHAT A LARGE NUMBER!! And the exchange! Of course Vince gets the BEST pot as
he draws his own card! I drew Carla's card (go figure) but gave it to Keith
who really needed a "Day of The Dead Mug" (mine is on it's way). John
Baymore got my sake cup after I'd bought his little teabowl in the cup sale.
There is balance in the universe.

For some reason, people kept handing me their cards "Russel, help me find
this one" (probably because I kept getting in the way). "Who do you have?".
"Amber Pelish????" I turned green as I handed over Amber's Ray "Mug" (the
marriage offer still stands, Millie). (Amber, wanna make a trade?) As I
sighted Carla across the table, "Who do you have, Carla?" "Some guy called
Neely". Turning green again as I hand over the teabowl. I got away with a
gorgeous blue-black David McBeth teabowl and a Gary Shaffer wood fired mug.

After being first in line (4:00am) in NY for one of Pete's terra sig mugs I
figured I'd take it easy and get there at 5 am. WRONG! The first in line
were there at 2:00!! I was about 30th in the line. Met some great early
morning (late night?) people, always a fun part of the cup sale for me. But
by the time I got in (3rd group of 10) the pot's I'd scoped out were gone
(I'll get that mug from you direct Richard) BUT there are always PLENTY more
to choose from. One find was a mug with a Malcom Davis, shino that seemed to
have Malcom a little worried. And all the pots made it through 3 plane
changes! (a future CM article)

And I'm certainly going to bring more pots to trade next time! Maybe I
should trade chocolate for pots?

But the real fun of NCECA is the people you meet. The Clayart (emphasis on)
Hospitality room was one of the best places to be. Sure beat the "Big Ass
Bar on Two" (thanks Carla). What a welcoming "buncha mugs"! I think everyone
felt right at home there. It's amazing how high Mel can hike up his pants
and still say "Wall-eyed Pike" with out his voice cracking! Lori Leary's
going to teach me how to squeeze more sylables into my words (speak
southern) this fall on Pawleys Island. Mishi Lowe will convert me to IRC
yet! Nan "Coffin Kiln-Welty", Richard and "PAB?" proved to me that "Hotel
Dicks" really do exist (not just in the Chandler novels I love). Bacia's
always a delight especially when she introduces one to as wonderful a potter
and person as Marta Gloviczki. And finally meeting Keith Chervenak after he
introduced me to Rusty Riegleman via email. Rusty's the first person I ever
met who has to decorate her food before she eats it (mustard and ketcup slip
trailing no less). The very approachable Ron Roy, the delightful (as well as
meticulously loose) Liz Willoughby, Bobby, Fabienne, all the people who I've
"talked" to on Clayart and finally have faces and memories to hold in my
imagination as I write.

NCECA 99 also included a touch of the sureal; losing track of Joe after the
dance only to have him suddenly reappear in the elevator in a sari! then
disappear two floors later. Paul Lewing's "Nice Shoes" calling card.

Oh yeah! The "Up On Three Legs" lecture was terrific (Carla and I shared my
binoculars) and watching Mark Hewit throw (and CATCH) big pots was a treat,
David Pinto showed some of his wonderful work and I think Richard Selfridge
showed us every pot they ever made. ;-)

Did this make you want to be there? Good, see you in Denver. ;-) And get
your chocolate orders in early!

Russel

Gosh, partner, I thought I was the only one having the most fun in Columbus!
I delivered my mug to the ClayArt room and met the man who never has met a
stranger in his life, Mel. And Kirt was running a close back up! Thanks to
you and to everyone else I met while visiting the ClayArt room. Kathy
Gordon, you are on fire, lady! Let's talk Chinese. I hope someone is
enjoying my basic functional mug.
I couldn't make my way over soon enough with the huge crowd before he
disappeared, to bend an ear to Mr. Sadow. You and your pots are still a
mystery to me. Glad you are out there on line.
Let's do it again next year in Denver, don't you know!
