Sorry, I deleted the original before I thought of replying.

If your kiln is going to be in Arlington, feel free to e-mail me off
list. I have a sprung arch natural gas car kiln which I built myself.
It is in a building which my husband built for it in our very small back
yard. There are a number of gas kilns in Arlington, and so far the
county has been very reasonable. Permits are needed for the wiring,
chimney (if it's a tall brick structure), and for the gas plumbing. We
needed a permit for the building, too, because it was larger than 150
square feet. The guy who did my plumbing used to work with the county
inspector - what luck! The gas inspector and the plumber both wanted
info from the burner supplier (I used Marc Ward). The gas company put in
a gas line with a meter for the kiln at no charge - guess they thought
I'd fire more often and that my kiln would burn a lot more gas than it
does. They will make the decision based on your burner size and the
frequency with which you intend to fire.

We just approached everything with the county very calmly and there was
no problem.
