washing wood ash?

I'm new to glaze mixing, after buying my own kiln and buying glazes, I
quickly discovered : "these things are expensive" and I'd better
figure out how to make them my self. I mixed up several different
recipes tonight and wanted to do one with wood ash just because it seems
interesting that ashes can be used for anything at all.

I have a couple questions.

How in the heck do you wash ashes?

Why in the heck do you wash ashes?

How much difference is there in the colors obtained from different
ashes?

I will gladly welcome any advice on mixing glazes, I'm using an electric
kiln, generally cone 5-6. on a dark stoneware clay.

Thanks

Jeff
