Hi all,

Am jealous reading all the feedback from NCECA -- wish I could have been
there.
Question about ^018-020 luster overglazes: can someone tell me how to avoid a
crackly finish? I use them over a ^06 fired clear glaze and sometimes get a
nice smooth finish, sometimes a disturbing "crackle" -- the procedure doesn't
vary, so why do the results?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Karen in Sonoma

Is use a mother-of-pearl overglaze luster alot. I have found that spots in
the kiln that cool down faster will cause this crazing effect. To avoid this
fire slow, and cool down even slower. If you find that the bottom of the kiln
is where the problem is add 15 minutes to the low firing cycle. Try using
cone packs on each shelf at the edge and the middle. This will give you a
wealth of information.
Good Luck

I am ready to experiment with Luster overglazes that fire to cone 04.

How do they turn out in a reduction kiln? I don't usually reduce at all for
this temperature but just leave every thing wide open. However gas is still
in the kiln just because of the nature of the beast. Do the colors still
come out? I hate to waste the money and firing time if it is a lost cause.
