kevlar fire protection

I'm chasing this topic pretty hard and should have some recommendations by
the end of next week. My present set-up consists of kevlar gauntlets,
fireproof cotton sleeves and stocking cap, and a Huntsman headband with
acrylic face shield, meant for grinding. I went to kevlar gloves after I
burned through a pair of welder's gauntlets (leather). I went to the
sleeves after getting the Pyrolytic Depiliation Treatment (TM), twice. I
went to the cap after the FOURTH time I set my hair on fire (some of us are
slow learners), and the acrylic face shield is all bubbled up.

The local Fire Chief is doing some research on finding an affordable helmet
with polycarbonate shield and "Lawrence of Arabia"-style neck collar. I
think this will do it - I won't have to remember cap and face shield -
they'll be one unit.

By this time next week I'll know what to get, how much, and where to get it
and will post my results.

Roger,

Be aware that Kevlar has a temperature rating of around 800F. There are many
fabrics on the market that can withstand much higher temps. We carry ZetexPlus
mittens which are UL Listed to 2000F. If you want a suit that allows you to
stand in the inferno of an aviation fuel fire, we carry it.

you mentioned;

I might suggest a nomex hood (woven like a ski mask, but made out of fire
resistent material). These are the hoods that drag racers and stock car
drivers wear along with firefighters. This hood with a polycarbonate face
shield, should help. Or you can go all the way and get a Aluminized Zetex hood
with built-in adjustable hard cap, and a gold-plated tempered glass liftup
window :-)....We carry all this stuff and can advise you on what you might
need. Feel free to give us a call and get a free catalog. We'll be in Columbus
with some of this stuff for NCECA, so we won't be able to help via phone much
next week,.... but you can still call and get a catalog.
