electric cone 10/kilns/shelves

Hi All,
I'm moving my studio, and rebuilding my gas kiln. I fire to cone 10 but
don't reduce. A friend asked why I don't switch to electric firing since
reduction isn't in the picture. The idea of more consistant firings and
temps is appealing, as well as a controller to make firings a little
less labor intensive. Also the kiln shed could be built smaller, saving
$$. I have to stay at cone 10 to keep using a very popular glaze tha'ts
my signature design.

Questions:
Shelves:
In my gas kiln I have had trouble with pressed alumina shelves warping.
Is anyone out there firing to cone 10 electric using shelves that don't
warp? I know Jonathan swears by Acme Marls shelves. Are these different
from the pressed high alumina shelves I got from Bailey that warped?

Kilns:
I'm looking for advice on electric kilns that really make it to cone
10. So far it looks like I should go with something that has 2 1/2"
walls backed up by 1 inch of insulation. Bailey and Cone Art seem to
have this. Are they the same kiln? I read that Bailey makes Cone Art. ?.
Is anyone out there firing the L&L Davinci to cone 10? I really like
the element holders on my L&L bisk kiln. Basicly I want to know if I'm
crazy to think of firing electric to 10.....

Controllers: I've read that some don't like the L&L controllers. ?.

I've searched the archives about this stuff and have found the dejanews
searcher to be the easiest to use........

Hi Jennifer,

I fire a Coneart 2327-1 to cone 9-10 consistently. I'm a very small
operation since I also teach art in public school part time, but have
had no trouble reaching cone 9. The Auto Fire is a wonderful invention
and can control rate of climb and rate of cooling. Shimpo has bought
Coneart from Tucker but there are plenty of dealers. Call Shimpo's 800
number for a nearby dealer. Hope this helps.

Nancy

Jennifer, as I'm sure you'll hear, they aren't the same-gas oxidation and
electric. We switched from electric to gas-mostly reduction, and glazes
improved dramatically. You'll probably have to find new glazes and/or adapt
yours to work well.

Can you find someone firing electric now and stick afew pieces in their
kiln? At least you'd get an idea before making a major and expensive to
reverse decision.
