stilts/saggers

Looking for advice:
I would like to eliminate the small ring of unglazed surface remaining on cone
6/7 elecric kiln fired items. Stilts? Any other method suggested?
Additionally, I would like some detailed guidance on the construction and use
of saggers in an electric kiln, firing at cone 6/7 for the purpose of
smoking, flashing, reducing in an otherwise oxidation atmosphere. I have seen
some references to this subject previously but would like to get into it in
more depth.

Thanks for any help to be given.

Hi Marvin,

Go for it! The truth of our pots is unique for each of us. If the truth
for you is a glazed surface uninterrupted by the unglazed base then that is
for you to judge and go for.

I used to stilt pots at cone 10 and now I do it at cone 06......I know Jan
Walker on this list is doing stilted stuff I think at cone 6, me and Jan
had us a "stilting bee" last fall and made a lifetime worth of stilts.
Perhaps she will have pointers for you (pardon the pun).

At cone 10 the porcelain pointies are the only way to go. For cone 6 it
seems prudent to give them a try first. Remember that you want the points
to hit the pot as near the outer wall as possible to avoid deforming the
pot. You'll find out by experimentation exactly how prone your pots are to
slumping.
