inexpensive color price sheet/catalogs

There have been several inquiries to the list over the last year asking
how to make inexpensive color price sheets for use at wholesale shows or
even for retail catalogs. As we all know, having a 4 color 8 1/2 x 11
sheet printed can run $1000 and is only economical when you need a lot.
When you need a hundred or so, the price per page is exhorbitant.

I have just finished getting ready for the Rosen show in Philadelphia
next week and struggled hard with this question. I found, for me, a very
satisfactory solution which I thought might be of use to others. Having
just bought a new iMac and an Epson 740 printer to go with it, I decided
to give that a try. I had tried printing a color sheet on a fairly new
(1998 vintage) Hewlett Packard 870Cse and, frankly, was underwhelmed.
Well, the Epson is a horse of a different color. In its 1440 dpi mode,
it prints an outstanding color page on "photo quality ink jet paper" that
is only $0.15 per sheet. I scanned regular 4x6 photos at 150 lpi and
reduced them to about 1/4 that size at 300 lpi. I laid out the page with
PageMaker and printed them on the Epson 740. My daughter, a professional
graphic designer who works daily with color printers, says it is as good
a print job as most printers will do and definitely better than some.

For 1 color and 1 black ink cartridge ($60 for both) and $15.00 of paper
I was able to print 100 sheets. $0.75 each for materials! That's as
cheap as color xerography and much better quality. Even if I had to pay
for the printer and a scanner, the total bill would have been less than a
color printer would have charged me.

The usual disclaimers apply. I have no financial interest in Epson. I
was just so extremely impressed with the current level of color available
from this printer, I had to let the world of potters know about it. It is
a huge step ahead of earlier generations and, at least in my experience,
also a huge step ahead of a very new HP printer. The printer, by the
way, was $279. I think they are down to $249 now.

"It is time for potters to claim their proper field. Pottery in its pure
form relies neither on sculptural additions nor on pictorial decorations.
but on the counterpoint of form, design, colour, texture and the quality
of the material, all directed to a function." Michael Cardew in "Pioneer
Pottery"

John,
I also have an Epson Printer and love it. However, the store-bought ink
refills can get expensive. An inexpensive alternative is to purchase Ink
Refills Kits and do it yourself. It's not that messy and works great. I
print out my Photoshop pictures and they look great with the replacement
refills. I purchase the refills at local computer 'fairs' for a few bucks
and get an average of 16 refills per color.

Mega Color, a national franchise, offers 2500 full color, very good
quality printed line sheets, including one professionally-taken
photograph for around.......... $400.

They have 800 numbers and photo studios across the country.
I recommend them.
