waterproofing terra cotta

The material used to waterproof terra cotta is a water based asphalt
emulsion. You can probably find it at building supply stores. If not, a
roofing supply store would carry it. I spent way too much of my youth coating
roofs with the stuff. It can be thinned with water but is waterproof when it
dries. It looks brownish in the can but dries to a flat black. Make sure you
clean up everything before it sets up.
Good luck.
