Hey folks. I'll be coming to Washington DC at the end of this month with a
group of students. We will be spending a lot of time on the mall, but I wanted
to know what clay/glass sites were to be seen off the mall. Galleries,
exhibitions, museums, potteries, you name it...I'm interested.

I know this question has been asked before. I'll be checking the archives for
sure. But still wanted to know if anything new has developed.

Thanks,

doug

Doug,

The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria might be a place you would
like to visit.

Check out the website: http://www.torpedofactory.org

Find out what is going on at the Renwick. It is almost opposite the
White House so you could take in both in one trip.

Dennis:

The Renwick is my favorite of the Smithsonean museums, but it is not on the
Mall. It is across the street from the White House on the corner of
Pennsylvania and 17th, NW. They focus on the works of Amercian crafts
artists. As well as having wonderful exhibits, they also have lots of
active seminars and lectures in the second floor salon. They also have an
interesting little store.

I live within 25 minutes of Renwick and shamefully don't keep up with the
current activites, but I suspect you can ask them fax you such a list.

Remember that each museum has it's own hours, but few of them are open
after 5pm daily. The only day the museums are closed however is Christmas
Day.

Hints?:

I suspect this is an =22art=22 tour, but I can highly recommend a detour =
that
kids just love: the Insect Zoo in the Natural History museum (next to the
national Gallery of Art. It is the only =22living=22 display. They have a
working beehive and hourly feedings of some incredible animals. It is
hidden away on the 2nd floor and well worth exploring.

I see lots of children's groups come to the Mall and it seems that kids
get easily lost in the endless mazes of the museums. If all your kids
could wear the same colored teeshirts with each child having a nametag
attached to it, it might help us all help you find any strays. You might
also have each child carry a piece of paper with the name of the hotel and
their contact person's phone number.

Not much in the Renwick these days! Pretty fallow time. I'll check the paper
on Friday and see what shows are in the galleries and how long they will be
there. I also suggest that you try the Torpedo Factory----but, I don't know
about your transportation situation with the group. Usually groups stay around
the DC center....typically at one of the interesting older hotels! You
however, may be taking the luxury route!

There are some craft galleries in Georgetown on M street. American Hand has
always been interesting. And Maureen Littleton. There is a premier glass
gallery in Bethesda (a northern suburb of DC but really just an extension of the
city) sort of near a Metro. The Lee Art Center in Arlington is a very nice
studio set up. I don't know if they have anything going and the Ellipse Gallery
also in Virginia is an excellent craft gallery. If there is anything going on
there, it will be in the paper this Friday.

There are a few clayarters in the area, Doug. Are you interested in meeting
anybody for dinner or lunch?
