Can any of you think of a substitiute for cryolite (10) in the Shiny Black
recipe recently submitted? I was intrigued since you said it looked GREAT =
over
Randy's Red which I use a lot of. Since I know how GREAT Chun Clear looks =
over
Randy's, I can only imagine the interaction between Shiny Black and Randy's=
Red
unless someone out there can please come up with a good substitute for the
cryolite. I promised myself I'd buy no more chemicals right now=21 Thanks in
advance.

Hello Mary,

on a theoritical basis cryolite could be substituted for
in the following manner:
1% cryolite by .332% alumina hydrate and .668% soda ash,
or
.245% alumina and .755% soda ash.
But soda ash is soluble.

There is no effective substitute for cryolite that I know of. Connie
