Hello List members;
Does anyone have a Cone 6 glossy black that does not use nickel oxide and
is not too heavily loaded with managanses that would be suitable for a
studio/student setting?

Here is a great black that I use a lot.

Metallic Black ^5-6

Gerstley borate 11
Whiting 5
Custer 79
EPK 6
Cobalt Ox 2
Copper Carb. 4
Manganese Diox 4

Try it, and just a word of caution, if put on to thick it runs. Hope
you like it. Jennifer in Alpine, Tx

This is one of our regular studio glazes.

Glossy Black

Kona F-4 79
Whiting 5
EPK 5
Gerstley borate 11

Additions:

Cobalt carbonate 2
Manganese dioxide 4
Copper carbonate 4

It's a wonderful shiny black, but waxy where really thick. Hope it
works for you.

Try this one, I like it:
Potash Feldspar - 42
Silica - 26
Whiting - 15
Kaolin - 15
Zinc Oxide - 12
Red Iron Oxide - 8 to 10
Cobalt Oxide - 1 to 2

Semi-gloss to gloss; deep blue-black to black, breaks black/green (good)

I just calculated this glaze out of curiosity - it has a good supply of
alumina and silica so the temtation would be to assume it is durable. There
is a fly in the ointment however - well actually two - there is a lot of
sodium and a lot of copper - both of which promote leaching.

I sure would like to know if this glaze is releasing any copper, cobalt or
manganese into acidic food.

It is going to craze on a lot of bodies as well and that increases the area
that the acid gets to work on.
