frit formulas and "secrecy"

A couple of years ago, I contacted a frit maker to ask about the contents
and proportions of the oxides included. They, also, claimed that letting
anyone know the formula would "compromise their leadership position" by
letting the competition know what they made.

in all truth- this is almost pure BS.

I am not sure of the motivation, really, but it is probably just "protect
your B---" philosophy. The real fact is that any frit maker who has even
the most minimum quality control lab, can tell exactly what is in any frit
sample they buy, over the counter. The only real secret is in how they get
there, not in the end product. They MUST have the capability to check their
own product, or hire it done, or they have no quality control, at all.

Any Frit maker that wont tell what their oxide list is, wont get any sales
from me, because , as any reputable potter must, I HAVE to know that I am
not getting any lead or other hazardous stuff.

Come to think of it, maybe they DONT have any quality control (?)
