Hi Lili,

Before my latest life as a ceramic artist, I was a pastry chef for almost 30
years. I used glycerin in that arena and bought it in gallon containers for
very little money from my bakery ingredient supply. Try calling one in your
area, most of them will sell to the public if you pick up the product. I also
believe that chemical supply houses carry glycerin.
Hope this helps,
Karen in Sonoma

Hi,

Glycerin acts as a humectant similar or same as
Propylene Glycol. A humectant means it will keep it
wetter longer and act like a water based lubricate.
This gives it better flow and allows a smoother finish
and since it hold the moisture longer it also allows
surface tension to lose it grip in some cases.
One might could consider a small addition of a
surfactant as well where you may want more penetration
of your glazes since this wets out the product.

You can usually find USP glycerin in most any drug
store and Propylene Glycol may be ordered form
specialty groups in smaller amounts. 5 Gallons at a
time. USP in both forms. That way you know you are
getitng consummable grade materials and the cost is
seldom much different.

Also I deeply appreciate the way people are handling
the issue about mental health on this forum. We as a
people are known for showing sympathy towards a Cancer
patient, someone with a heart disease, etc... Seldom
do we show this towards a person with a mental health
problem. I am sure there are cases of mental health or
un-health that has been as equal burden to them as
would be a physical sickness. I have seen more often
than not the un-fair treatment and lack of respect and
courtesy many of our society have thrown on those with
such illnesses. If its something thats not as well
understood as cancer or heart disease then maybe its
time we get better educated.

Personally I am one of the few people I know that
could make a glaze with lithium no gloves on and a
ploom of dust like a mushroom cloud and still benefit
from it. (Please do not try this at home.)
