dipping glazes

Hey folks,

Been following the thread on dipping in glazes and I thought I'd pass
this little hint along. I have found that it is a lot easier to hold
onto the pot if it has a foot ring but sometimes the piece does not.
These footless pots are tough to grip when dipping so one solution would
be to wax the bottom and dip the top half, then wait for the glaze to
dry before dipping the bottom. The problem is there is often an
unattractive overlap halfway up the pot (which actually can be nice
depending on the glaze and the look you're going for). I personally hate
to wax if I can help it because it is a time consuming step and is often
messy.

A better method is to dip your fingers in water just before grabbing the
pot and dipping. The moisture from your fingers goes right into the
bisque and allows you to momentarily grip the pot, just long enough to
hold the pot in the glaze for a count of 4 or 5. The trapped air then
buoys up the pot and sort of propels it out of the glaze bucket. At this
point most of the moisture is leaving your fingers but there is usually
just enough time to shake off a few drips and turn the pot back up. I do
this all the time and find I rarely have to wax and I only drop a pot
once in a great while.

Hope this is useful,

Peter Atwood
