Mike McD:
You're onto something. Now all we gotta do is prove it. Like you I
feel certain a powerful flux like ZnO will lower the fusion of the glaze
before it disappears up the flue. Copper reds, usually very fluid, show
some improvement with a small amount of ZnO in the recipe (say 0.05-0.08
molar, 2 wt%). A local potter asked me why the outside of her vase looked
so different from the inside when both surfaces were coated with her
copper red mix. I pointed out to her that CO/H2 would whack the outside
okay but have trouble getting inside the tall vase, and so the inside coat
still had most of its zinc oxide while the outside did not.
Great fun this pottery business. TTYL. Peace. Tom.
