Clayarters:

University of North Texas Faculty/Artist Elmer Taylor will conduct a =
workshop at
Cedar Valley College of the Dallas County Community College District on
Wednesday December 9, 1998 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The workshop is free and open=
to
the public.

Elmer Taylor was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. After earning =
his
Master of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics from Arizona State University in =
Tempe
Arizona, Taylor went to England to apprentice with Master Potter Michael =
Leach.
Upon his return to the United States, he taught at Mercer University in =
Macon
Georgia for two years before coming to teach at the University of North =
Texas in
1974. He now teaches Ceramics as Professor of Art in the School of Art at =
UNT.
Taylor's attitude toward ceramics is best expressed in his own words:

=22I gear my pottery to satisfy the needs of the kitchen and table, =
restricting
myself to producing a limited range of forms that are continually refined. =
Some
refinements come from observations made in the daily use of the pottery in =
my
own home. Others come from repeatedly working with similar forms over a =
period
of years.=22

=22My goal is not to make pots but to allow them to grow from the =
interaction
between the qualities inherent in clay as a material and my skill as a
craftsman. It is my hope the the pots I produce honors those potters who =
came
before me and inspires those who come after me.=22

The college is located in the southern part of Dallas county at 3030 North
Dallas Avenue in the town of Lancaster,Texas. The ceramics studio is in E
Building Room 114.
