wholesale vs. consignment

Ray,

I think it's just delightful that from McMahons Creek you are able to sell all
you can make without doing any consignment. I just think that it is
inconsiderate of you to generalize your circumstances around the globe. In
this last post you say "If it is good honest work you will easily find people
willing to pay up front for it". Please try to recognize that you are making
an assumption here that market conditions are similar wherever a potter may
be. I don't believe you really have the experience to substantiate that
assumption. Also try to recognize that for those who are not in circumstances
where wholesale suffices your statement above can be read as a suggestion that
their work is lacking in "goodness" or "honesty". I don't believe that such is
your intention. But if you will allow yourself to see that your remarks may be
received in this way you may be better able to understand why some have their
hackles up.

Ray et al, I feel Michael McDowell, has hit the nail
on the head. Our economy is so down that no
matter how good your work is or how well
established you are you have to accept that
consignment is the only way you are going to
make sales. The galleries etc are in the same
cash flow squeeze as we are. They just cannot
afford to lay out the money up front.
Generalisations are onerous at the best of times,
but this one is particularly so. Just as you, Ray,
expect others to let you have your say, you may
not expect others to either accede to your
demands or agree to impractical or unwarranted
practices. Let's put this onerous thread to rest,
and enjoy the holiday season. Ralph in PE SA
wondering when the bl__dy wind will stop blowing
and let us enjoy the summer before it is over.

I decided to go wholesale this year with Wholesalecrafts.com. I don't know
if what I make is right for this site, but I thought I would give it a try.
One of the questions I had with the people at Wholesalecrafts was "what if I
get a really big order." That really scared me because it's just me making
my tiles. They said if the orders get too plentiful or too big, just change
the time frame of when they would be ready, instead of 4-6 weeks - 6-8 weeks.
Now I need to make the decision of whether to take credit cards or not.

I also just price my tiles at 50%, they sell like hotcakes at $48-52 per tile
at the tile shows and at the galleries. If they are priced higher, they sit
(I test out my prices at the silent auction at the Pewabic show and usually I
am right on).

I have narrowed my focus to the tiles on my site and the few colors that are
there. That saves me from making buckets of glazes and I have the process
down to rolling the clay, pounding the tiles in the molds, drying, staining,
firing. Anything beyond what I offer is custom and I charge more.

So far, there hasn't been any big rush of orders (ha) and that is fine with
me, I feel I need time to get organized, set up my website, read as much as I
can. If I get a few new galleries in the next year, I will be happy.
