Go down the hall and to the left... in a typical high school in a small
town in Wisconsin. We stopped in to see the Bindley exhibit in Verona
that was posted a couple weeks ago. What a show! I have read books by
one of the potter's represented, been to workshops by a few, and know
many of the others only from reading of them. A friendly student
directed us to the clay rooms where there was a class finishing up.
These students were obviously 'into' it. We were able to talk briefly
with Randy Becker about the clay program. The school has an enrollment
of 1200 and 700 students try to enroll in clay each semester. It's
wonderful to see what an amazing program can be built up with an
instructor who obviously enjoys and respects the students and is able to
enlist support from the community. Inspiring... perhaps I'll do a
little extra with my 4-h pottery project kids this year.
