underglaze gotchas at cone 6

Hi,

Having used a variety of putative black underglazes at ^6Red & ^6Ox and
have found very few that stay black. Rather, most tend to dark blue --
Amaco is definately navy, Axner's black is about the best, but it requires
several coats to avoid graying out where thin. Most Mason blacks turn blue,
but Mason 6600 ("Best Black") stays black . It probably needs to be ball
milled with some clay, as I usually get a grainy strokes.

Also, if you plan to mix decals and brushwork on the same pot, I recommend
planning on contrasting colors. Don't expect your brush stroke to have any
chromatic resemblance to your decal. For me, matching brush-applied
decoration to a decal has proven to be an exercise in futility, even when I
browbeat the decal mfr into sending me the very colorant used on the
decals! The color varies enormously with thickness of colorant and covering
glaze. An inequality with too many variables...

Better to look at a big framed Japanese Kanji, celebrate the variation in
ink saturation, varying from absence of to dense opacity, and go ye do
likewise. Or look at the cover of Coleman's glaze book if you want to eat
your heart out on sensitive figurative brushwork.

It is my understanding that most blacks contain cobalt. Mason stains
indicate the chemical content, so one without any cobalt shouldn.t
turn blue.
