summer workshops info wanted

updated mon 15 mar 99

Hey, does anyone know of any great workshops out there for late spring
or anytime in summer? I would prefer info for the east coast, but
can be tempted by whatever people send. Has anyone taken a workshop
from Robert Briscoe before? Opinions? He's teaching one at Peter's
Valley this summer that looks intriguing. The title caught my eye
("Quiet Beauty/Strong Pots"). Marketing really is half the battle
sometimes isn't it?

I don't know if this person is aware of Penland School in North Carolina, or
Arrowmont in Tennessee, but I know several ppl who have gone to both places
and they love it there. My professor, Linda Arbuckle, has taught there a
number of times. Kathy King is teaching there this summer...she is an alum
of the grad program here at UF.

You might want to check with Joyce Michaud at Hood College in Frederick, MD
(not too far from Gettysburg). She has workshops year round, and they are
good.

Due to a variety of complications, we are just now finalizing our workshop
schedule for next summer. And FINALLY we have a new workshop and events
coordinator in place, after over two years without one. She is hard at work
ironing out all the details and getting info sent in. Although we have a
great group of people lined up, I just returned from Christmas break, and
don't know yet for sure who is firmly committed, so I cannot list them yet.
Hopefully I will have that info within a week. I will post it as soon as it
is available.

Hi Doug, I took a Robert Briscoe workshop a year ago (weekend one at
Hinckley pottery in DC) and it was great, he talks the whole time he's
throwing and altering and decorating so you never have to wonder where
the ideas are coming from--very personable guy, shared all his recipes.
I was really taken by the ash glazes and rushed home to try them all but
beware, the magic isn't in the glaze; it must be in the potter.

Peter King's Architectural Ceramics Workshop in Pensacola is July 5 thru
July 11 and it is tremendous.
Fireplace construction, mantels, sinks, tiles, installations... too much to
recite... goes on...
It is intensive and wonderful! Xenia Marin, Peter's wife, also added bonus
with her knowledge of
glazes!! Then there is the beach....white as sugar...on the Gulf of
Mexico...in northwest florida where
the cost of a hotel is still reasonable...I strongly recommend....
