Using CMC gum may help. This really helps the surface when doing brush
work. From my understanding, CMC gum can decompose in the glaze because
it is an organic material, unless a preservative is added (formaldehyde
or vancide).

Last, adding two percent bentonite helps harden the raw surface because
it too is Al and Si. This does not change the fired results. Bentonite
bloats in water so add it as a dry ingredient and mix well before adding
the water.

Furimsky mentioned bentonite for helping the glaze adhere.

I am trying to use a similar material, but wait for it ... used cat
litter.

It's just a bit wet. No cat faeces. They seem to do that outdoors.

But it is mainly montmorillinite, a kind of bentonite. The composition
give by the manufacture is SiO2 66.5 Al2O3 12.3 MgO 2.9 Fe2O3 6.0 Na2O
1.4 K2O 1.7 CaO 1.7 rest trace.

With a little cat urea for colour it might have some good use as a glaze
component. Has anyone else tried it? Can you experts see any real
problem?
