Okay, sorry, but here's another "I'm going somewhere and can you tell me where
to visit" message. Please respond to me privately.

My husband and I are going south from Washington State to Mexicali, Mexico
(with a stop at Joyce Lee's on the Mojave on the way) then east thru southern
Arizona to Las Cruces, NM then north (with a stop at Jeff Lawrence's in
Espanola) to Colorado Springs, Colorado to Lincoln, Nebraska to Bismark, ND
then from there we go either directly west home or we may go north thru
Canada. We will be spending most of our time in NM, thanks for some
suggestions already, Jeff.

Any can't miss places?

Thanks,
Lynne
This is sort of a "cancer treatment is over and one year after" celebration
trip. So great to feel good again.

Lynne,

I had this addressed to you, but I reverted to the list because I think that
everyone should have the opportunity to share the experience of others.
Those who aren't interested in this thread certainly know where the Delete
key is.

My wife and I were in the area earlier this year. There is the Acoma pueblo
that is famous, but we found most of the potters there had gone to slip
casting and, while the decoration on some pieces was very good, we were a
little disappointed by the trend to slip casting. Some of the more memorable
pieces that we bought were little turtles made by a lady who looked to be
about, oh, 150 or so years old. These weren't exhibition pieces by any
means - at first glance you might think that a grade schooler had made them,
but they had such innocence and charm - and you should have seen the look on
the lady's face when someone actually bought some of her pieces! That alone
was worth the purchase price.

Next, Jemez Springs (near Los Alamos) is a must do. There is a shop there
run by a German or Swiss lady with _beautiful_ pieces at very good prices.
Lots of polychrome and blackware. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the
place, but if you go from San Ysidro toward Los Alamos, it is on your left.
Jemez Springs is not a very big place.

Of course, if you are in the Jemez Springs/Los Alamos area, you are next
door to the San Ildefonso pueblo, home of the legendary Maria Martinez.

Finally, as long as you are taking the time to drive route 4 up across the
lip of the volcano there, I strongly suggest that you stop and spend some
time at the cliff dwellings at Bandelier National Park.

I hope you have a nice trip.

By the way, my wife, also named Lynne (complete with the "e" at the end)
marked her first year after cancer surgery just a couple of months ago.
Celebrate!

Don't miss Rich Hepp just North of Las Cruces.

If you'd like to head up into the Southern rockies Make your way to
Cloudcroft and go see my mentor Don Ellis at Cloudcroft pottery....

You could also go to the San Ildefonso Pueblo and see some of their great
black on black ware....

Have fun, Ben

PLEASE do not respond privately. I am keeping a travel file and can't wait to
use all this information that I collect.

Lynne, When you are in Nebraska you might check out the
Sheldon Art Gallery in Lincoln 402-472-2461
in Omaha:
the Joslyn Art Museum 402-342-3300
and the Bemis Center ..402-341-7130
If you call ahead I am sure they will let you know
what exhibits are going on the time you are there.
Hope you enjoy Nebraska!!!

Lynne, If you like history, don't miss Lincoln NM, center of the Lincoln
County land wars where Billy the Kid gained his fame. It hasn't changed
much since. Consider spending the night at the Whortley Motel (I assume
it's still there). You can probably weave by it when heading up from Las
Cruces to Santa Fe (assuming you'll be hitting Santa Fe - our favorite
restaurant is La Tertulia - probably butchered the spelling).

If you are going to Chaco, consider contacting them early to see if they will
let you see the 'pots in the back'. I went years ago and they hudification
system was broken so the pots weren't out. It was a great disappointment.
An employee told me to call ahead next time and I could make arrangments to
see the pots not on display. She said I could also call the museum (not
sure which one) in Albuquerque and do the same thing.

Have a good trip. I'd love to make that drive.

Theresa
