setting powdery glaze

An easy way to set powdery glaze without tinkering with the glaze
recipe is to mix common liquid laundry starch (straight off the grocery
store shelf) with water, 50/50. Pour into a clean fine-mist sprayer.
Be sure the sprayer doesn't "spit." Spitting can mar the glaze surface.
Spray the dry piece from about 18-24 inches. Experience will show you
how much coverage you'll need. The starch will set the glaze and form a
shell that resists handling and smudging. Allow to dry before handling
gently. Another use for starch is to reglaze pieces you're unhappy
with. Add 4 to 6 tablespoons of straight liquid laundry starch to your
glaze in the sprayer cup you use at your spray booth. I've never tried
it with dipping, though. We used to use this on a glaze so powdery when
dry that particles wafted into the air whenever the a/c or heater cycled
on. Be sure to clean out your sprayer after each use, or the starch
will clog the nozzle and spit the next time it's used.
