Time for another visit to the Clayart Travel Bureau! My wife and I
are planning a trip to San Antonio, then down to Port Aransas (gotta
see those whooping cranes) and maybe Corpus Christi, in a couple of
weeks. So what craft galleries and other sites should we not miss.
I'm particularly interested in tile murals.
Of course we know about the SW Craft Center, and I've heard of the
Jesse Trevino mural at Santa Rosa Children's Hospital. Anything else
we shouldn't miss?
Thanks,
Paul Lewing in rainy Seattle

Paul, If you have never been to San Antonio before then you should not
miss the McNay musuem, and the San Antonio Museum of art, it usually has
some really great pottery in it. Go down to the Blue Star Gallery
district as well, there are a lot of coops, and individual studios that
have a little bit of everything in them. Also, at Blue Star is a great
micro-brewery and resturant. Hope this helps and you have a great time
there. Jennifer in Alpine, Tx.

Hmmm. Well, if you are going through/are in Corpus Christi, then Louis Katz
can probably direct you to some interesting ceramics. There are several
installations there, scattered about, as well as some good potters. Bill
Wilhelmi's
studio is in downtown Corpus Christi, (or was=3B haven't been there in a =
while).
Greg Reuter and Bill Wilhelmi designed/installed a tile floor for the entry =
to
one of the major public buildings, City Hall? City-County building? =
Something
like that=3B and I saw in either CM or Clay Times, sometime in the last =
couple
years,
an article re: a tile installation at an old bus or train stop, done by =
another
Corpus
Christi ceramist. There's stuff....

The Whooping Cranes are out of Rockport, rather than Port Aransas, but there
is a boat trip out of Port Aransas that should take you across Aransas Bay, =
up
the intercoastal to Blackjack Penninsula, where dwell the cranes. The most
interesting way to get there, in my opinion. I believe there are also boat
trips
out of Rockport.

Have a good time. It sure will be different than the northwest coast. =
Think
=22flat=22. But the beaches are lovely for swimming.

Have a good time. Enjoy the River Walk, if the water is back in yet. They
drain it once a year to clean the bottom. This may be the time.
