Monona- Concerning your question if boric acid and borax are toxic for
tableware, the answer is no. According to Ceramic Handbook: A Guide to Glaze
Calculation, Materials, and Processes by Charles Mckee (by the way a good
refrence book!). I strongly suggest to look this book up to help you. Also,
borax is a soluble, so store in an airtight container because when the water
evaporates so does the borax. Good luck with glazing and don't be afraid to
use the boron family!!!

I wouldn't consider "The Ceramics Handbook" , McKee published in 1984 a source
of information on glaze safety.
In this book Pottassium dichromate is mentioned as a colorant with no mention of
safety, ... same with Uranium Oxide, Cadmium sulfide, Selenium Oxide etc.

Perhaps there is a new edition, but you perhaps should ask, "where did he get hi
information". By the way I do occasionaly use the book and it is one of a stack
that I lend to students interested in Glaze Calc.
