Dear Stacy,

It sounds like a Randall wheel. The Randall Wheel and Pottery Co.
is located in Rochester,NY, 505 University Ave., Apt 39, Rochester,
NY 14607. Phone #716-461-0136. Apparently you have a bucket
head on your wheel. Randall also makes a flat head which does
not require you to make plaster bats if you prefer.

Good luck, Debby Grant in NH

Hi,
I use pie tins, they have a nice slope to the sides and the plaster pops
out easily. Mike

Stacey,
Sounds like a Randall kick wheel. They advertise on Ceramics Monthly and
other places, and are located in upstate NY. It's a great wheel and bat
system, and three sizes of mold are available. I think they are 12, 16, and
20". The molds are expensive, and used to be aluminum. I don't know if they
are still that way. If you can't find Randall Pottery Equipment or don't
want to spring for a set of molds, Steve Jepson in Florida has either bought
or "borrowed" the the rights to make the bats (won't sell the molds) and an
adapter for standard wheelheads. No credit given, however.

Hi there Stacey! I bought my mold from Randall Wheel...see their add in
Ceramics Monthly, and the White plastic 'holder' for my plaster wheel head
from Jepson Pottery, also in Ceramic monthly adds. Jepson sells only the
individual plaster bats. I also had a machinist drill like holes in my
different wheel heads, so that the same system could be used on all. Of
course one can attach the plaster bats to the wheel head with slurry, but I
find its hard to recenter for additiional work after the initial throwing
is accomplished .Hope this helps. Lori in New Port Richey Fl where I lost my
banana trees last week in the cold...but people were basking on the sand non
the less!!

debby,
to further describe the wheel.....it has a silver-ish splash guard that holds
inside a "bucket" type form that the plaster bat fits down into, the bat looks
similar to an actual thrown pot and the foot. am i making sense? the support
is made from black painted(im assuming its paint), tubular metal. i wish i
could draw it for you! it would be so much easier! thank you for the help as
this is a serious problem or has the potential to be so.
hope this works!

A good place to start to look for the bats you are loking for is the randal
wheel company that is listed in ceramics monthly
also jepson pottery supply sells the bats that fit the dish that fits on a
randal wheel. it is a great bat system.
you can also make a bat mold yourself

Dear Stacey,

If your wheel also has a very heavy flywheel and a tractor seat
that adjusts up and down and back and forth it is definitely a
Randall and you are very lucky indeed to have it. I have had
mine for 38 years and it is just as good as when I first got it. I
think it is the most comfortable and versatile wheel made and I
also have a Brent and a Shimpo. When you call the Randall
Wheel Co. ask tham to send you a catalog and then you can be
sure. They also have a motor attachment if you are interested.

Good luck, Debby Grant in NH

I finally put a standard wheel head (and had it drilled for bat pins) on my old
Randall because I got tired of making the plaster bats. It's so much easier. I
highly recommend it.
