A friend of mine will be moving back to Philadelphia soon and will be looking
for a place to continue working in clay. He has heard that the Clay Studio
has a long waiting list,so he is trying to find all other options. Looking
forward to receiving some hopeful information. Thanks.

It's true that the waiting list to become an associate (a key to the studio
and shelf space) at the clay studio is long, usually a couple of years, here
are some ideas. They often have room for a volunteer associate, one who works
five or six hours a week in return for being an associate. There's a center in
Wallingford which is expanding and may have room sooner. We have a coop studio
in New Jersey, across the Betsy Ross or Ben Franklin Bridge, in Merchantville.
There are about a dozen of us, including one painter. I really like it there
although I am also an associate at the clay studio and can't seem to give up
either. Just nuts!

There are also buildings which rent studios to artists, one on Spring Garden
Street, one in Northern Liberties and a new one opening around 5th and Spring
Garden. There's also one in Manayunk and I'm sure others I don't know. The
folks at the clay studio are very helpful, the gallery manager is getting a
studio in the newly renovated building, not yet ready. Her name is Leslie.

There is a new pottery school and studio space location opening
this fall in Philadelphia.
It is located at 833 Morris street, Philadelphia, PA 19148 and
their phone is 215-463-2344.

They are fully equipped with professional pottery studio space and
equipment. It is brand new and I think the rates are reasonable,
but you will have to judge that for yourself.
