Michelle,
You might try mixing up various oxides in water, such as iron and/or cobalt.
Then apply the mix with a sponge or brush the outside of the piece. Wipe
off most of what you applied. There will be a residue of color, which will
be particularly interesting on pieces with texture, or that are faceted.
Functional pieces which are truly intended for use should be glazed inside.
