off center wheels/loose

just a note.
most wheels have several bolts holding the main bearing into the housing
of the wheel.
it is not uncommon for these bolts to loosen.
it may be a pillow block bearing, or a flat 4 bolt bearing.
just loosen the bolts, re center the wheel, and then tighten firmly.
when rebuilding my brent a with new motor, i changed the wheel head and
shaft, then centered the whole thing. then super tight.....torqued.

i may tell stories of east indian wheels that wobble, but i want mine `dead on
to spec`. as with all of my tools.....sharp, straight, plumb and true.
`nothin wrong with that.`

i would say that bearing/shaft center is the first thing to check.

wobble should be a thought out, conscious thing......a part of the design.
not because you have a bent shaft, or out of align wheel head.
primitives are often stuck with the technology that they have, it does not
mean
that they would not like a new lockerbie, electric......dead on. and the
power to
run it.
we may think that it would ruin their pots, but we do not have to sit on that
rickety wheel all day and make a living. (or collect the cow chips)

i do agree with warren mackenzie, looseness or tightness should be a natural
result of years of work, mixed with the personality of the potter...honesty.
(this is not a literal translation of warren. please)
